Second Day of UN Crime Congress Governmental Experts Meeting

The second day of the governmental experts meeting on the preparation of the Thirteenth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice started with the opening words of legal adviser to the Qatar Minister of Interior and chairman of the UN Congress organizing committee Dr. Abdullah Yusuf al Mal. He said that the meeting is to discuss the elements of the political declaration draft pointing that the General Assembly has directed in its resolution No. 185/68, according to resolution No. 119/56 that Thirteenth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice would announce one declaration to be submitted to the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Committee for consideration as well as the announcement will include major recommendations which cover the key recommendations and discussion of agendas and workshops.

During the 23rd meeting of Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Committee, the committee had recommended the Economic and Social Council to ratify the adoption of a draft resolution before the General Assembly entitled with (Follow-Up of the twelfth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice and the preparations of the thirteenth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice: he added.
According to the draft resolution, The General Assembly considers the progress made so far in the preparatory works for the thirteenth UN Congress and notices the directory prepared by the Secretary General in cooperation with the Institutes of the UN Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme Network for the regional preparatory meetings of thirteenth UN Congress as well as it agrees the importance of regional preparatory meetings that examined the substantive elements of the thirteenth Conference.

Apart from this, the General Assembly demands the Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Committee, according to its resolution No. 185/68 , to prepare short declaration draft which will involve main theme of the Congress in the meetings to be held prior to the thirteenth Congress sufficiently in order to consider the recommendations of the regional preparatory meetings and consultations with organizations and relevant bodies.
Thereafter Dimitri Vlassis, Chief of the Corruption and Economic Crime Section Division for Treaty Affairs in the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime said that we look forward to more contributions and ideas regarded to upcoming period towards the holding of the thirteenth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice and that the Thirteenth Conference will issue a declaration and key recommendations. He pointed out that the preparatory work for the Congress is characterized with distinct and comprehensive effort and there are good ideas put forward for the success of the Congress.
He insisted that the upcoming stage will witness more continuous work for more discussions and ideas until the holding of the Congress in April, and this will be completed very soon as there is great optimism that we will release the task and offer the best during the Congress to be held in next April in Doha.

The Moroccan representative Brig. Hadi al Ghaffal said that this conference has marked a fundamental sign in the series of crime prevention and criminal justice, which is supervised by the UN, by way of the great and extensive participation of the delegations that represent a large number of countries around the world, regardless of the topics or points for discussion
