Orientation Seminar for Expatriates on UN Crime Congress – DOHA 2015

The Media Wing of Preparatory Committee for Thirteenth United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice - DOHA 2015 organized an orientation seminar on Congress for the heads of non-Arabic expatriate communities, foreign media representatives and school heads at Officers’ Club of General Directorate of Civil Defence on Saturday, 7 March 2015. 102 participants attended the seminar.
Inaugurating the seminar, the head of Media Committee for the Congress Col. Abdullah Khalifa Al-Muftah said that the UN Crime Congress is one of the main periodic conference of United Nations which is held every 5 year. Doha Congress coincides with the 60 years since the first congress in 1955 at Geneva, Switzerland, he added. The last Congress was held in Brazil in 2010 and in 2011 UN General Assembly approved to hold next Congress in Doha, Qatar on 12-19 April 2015, Col said.
“For the first-time in the history of Crime Congress, Doha Youth Forum will be held in advance of the Congress on 7-9 April 2015 as a Qatari Initiative. The Forum will discuss the same topics of the Congress and will present the recommendation to the main Congress” he said.
Col. Al-Muftah stressed on the participation of public in crime prevention and criminal justice process as the theme of Doha Congress itself is "Integrating crime prevention and criminal justice into the wider United Nations agenda to address social and economic challenges and to promote the rule of law at the national and international levels, and public participation".
Further he explained the efforts by the Preparatory Committee under the chairmanship of HE Maj. Gen. Dr. Abdullah Yousuf Al-Maal and members from General Secretariat of Council of Ministers, Ministries of Interior and Foreign Affairs, Qatar Foundation as the committee visited many countries in preparation for the Congress.
“Around 6000-7000 people from around the world will participate in the Congress. As well 45 international civil society organizations also will take part. At the end of the Congress Doha Declaration will be agreed upon on issues of rule of law, international cooperation, emerging crimes such as cybercirmes and environment crimes, wild life protection and public participation”, the Media Committee head explained.
The Community Reach out Office at the PR Department of the Ministry gave a presentation on the Congress, its history, theme, agenda in addition to efforts of Qatar in the field of Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. As well the audience were introduced the website of the congress and social media pages and how to get involved with it.
The participants were happy to be part of this international event as it will give them an opportunity for participation in efforts for preventing crimes and ensuring criminal justice globally.
In his closing remarks, Col. Abdullah Khalifa Al-Muftah thanked the audience and urged them full cooperation and support for successful organization of the event. He further stated that the expatriate communities residing in Qatar play a major role in different activities held in the Country thus accomplishing Qatar Vision 2030.
He added that the Ministry has launched a website for the Congress in 4 languages (Arabic, English, French, Spanish) which can be accessed on https://portal.moi.gov.qa/UNCCPCJDoha/. As well he introduced social media pages of the Congress in Facebook and Google+ and urged public and the media to involve actively in it.
The Media Committee will continue its activities in coming days and it’s expected to organize a workshop for Arabic media persons in the second half of this month.
