 Activities of 13th UN Crime Congress Continues

The activities of the 13th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice continued on the second day at QNCC. The activities comprised of general sessions and workshops on rule of Law, human rights and the post 2015 development agenda, standards and rules of the UN in crime prevention and criminal justice in supporting fair and humanitarian criminal justice system, experience and lessons in responding to the special requirements of the ladies and children in treating the social reintegration for criminals and high level meeting on wildlife and forest crime : serious crime. In addition to this, an important seminar was held about the future of social legal awareness in crime prevention and achieving criminal justice.

Speaking in the first high-level event on second day, held by UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Permanent Missions of Italy and Thailand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, State of Qatar, Khalid Bin Mohammed Al-Attiyah said that Qatar is effectively contributing to support the rule of law on the regional and international level by standing against human rights violations. Enhancing the rule of law will have an important impact on the challenges currently facing the international community. In addition to the rule of law, human rights and development should be the pillars for joint work between members of the international community. HE also added that those three factors were reflected in Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims to reach a society enjoying strong development, social and economic justice and protection of human rights.

HE the Foreign Minister noted that the State of Qatar is participating in enhancing the rule of law regionally and internationally by promoting the peaceful resolution to political crises. His Excellency expressed his delight that the Doha Declaration, which was accredited yesterday, emphasizes on our joint responsibility in upholding the rule of law, human rights and sustainable development. The Doha declaration comprises of practical steps at national, regional and international levels in order to enhance it at all levels, added the minister.

The advancement of nations and civilizations cannot be reached unless the rule of law has been respected and the youth should gain knowledge and education as they are considered as the capital of human development”, HE the Minister said. He pointed that the Doha Youth Forum that gave the youth the opportunity to discuss ways to prevent crimes.

UNODC Executive Director Yury Fedotov told that UNODC is committed to efforts to oppose the criminals who sabotage the rule of law and sustainable development.

“Together, we can advance justice and uphold human dignity, and confront the criminals who undermine the rule of law and sustainable development,” said Mr. Fedotov. Acknowledging the importance of protecting the sustainable development goals from crime, Mr. Fedotov said major efforts were needed to ensure that the UN provides an integrated approach. The UNODC chief emphasized that coordination was essential to promote genuine participation and ownership by countries. Mr. Fedotov said countries needed clear, meaningful targets to uphold their commitments as well as to bolster international cooperation founded on the spirit of shared responsibility.

In closing remarks, Mr. Fedotov said, “It leaves no doubt that responsive, transparent and strong institutions that operate in accordance with the rule of law and promote justice are essential for overcoming poverty, and realizing human rights and fundamental freedoms.”

Other speakers included President of the 69th Session of the UN General Assembly Sam Kutesa; President of ECOSOC Martin Sajdik; Assistant Secretary-General of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Ivan Simonovic; Assistant Secretary-General Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO), Dmitry Titov; former President of Slovenia, Danilo Turk; Minister of Justice of Italy, Andrea Orlando; Minister of Justice of Thailand, Paiboon Khumchaya; and Assistant Administrator the UN Development Programme (UNDP) Magdy Martinez-Soliman.
